They are not to different really, but a caravan toilet needs to collect and store the waste, not flush it away into the town sewer system. They are also much lighter than a household toilet as we are always needing to watch the weight of any component that goes into a caravan. The construction is nearly always plastic, although some models have China bowls like a domestic model. We will show the various options of toilet, most of the differences are based around the different methods to store and dispose of the waste.
There are 5 main types of Caravan Toilet
These are the current standard type of toilet fitted to most caravans. They are named after the canister used to store and dispose of the toilet waste. They have a cassette that is removed from under the toilet accessed from outside the caravan. The contents of the cassette can then be emptied into a dump point, public toilet or into a household toilet. They require some form of odour control, we use additives to manage this.
There are 3 main suppliers of Cassette Toilets in Australia, Dometic, Thetford and more recently Fruecamp.
They are convenient and simple to use.

Using thermal sealing technology to seal waste inside hygienic barrier liners. No smell, no need for chemicals, no water used.
Do your business. Close the lid. Start the weld cycle and walk away. The sealed bags are cut off automatically , then disposed of in regular household waste.
There is a large range of versions of this type of Toilet, however we have found that only the more expensive versions seal reliably with heavier duty bags. The other consideration is how much of the internal bag lines the toilet, so accidents are easy take care of with a bag change, as some of the cheap versions are hard to keep clean.

But these are different to a Bag Sealing Toilet. These work more like a composting toilet, Urine is separated from the solid waste. You add a drying agent to the solid waste and it is sealed away from sight by a flap, if the solid waste is kept dry then there is no smell. Easy to empty as the solid waste is collected in a easily removable bag and the waste goes into the general rubbish.
Thetford also supply upgrade kits so an existing Thetford Cassette Toilet can be upgraded to a separation unit very economically.
The main advantage is you no longer have to carry chemicals and they are waterless so are great when you are needing to conserve water.

Similar to a Separating Toilet, Urine is separated from the solid waste. You add a drying composting agent to the solid waste.
The solid waste and the composting agent are then mechanically mixed to ensure the solid waste composts - this prevents smell. Easy to empty as the solid waste is collected in a compostable bag and the waste goes into the general rubbish or added to garden compost.
The main advantage is you no longer have to carry chemicals, is waterless and actually uses natural fermentation to create compost.

This incineration toilet provides the same comfort experience as you are used to at home. No separation of waste is required and a special paper liner must be used every time. The toilet does not require any water supply and ALL toilet waste is incinerated at high temperatures until only a tiny quantity of ash remains.
