Tow bar rattles occur due to gaps between the tongue and receiver. This kit includes 304 stainless steel shims that fill the gap, securing the tongue tightly in the receiver to reduce knocking when driving. The set provides four shims in two thicknesses, allowing eight stacking combinations for a precise fit.

Designed for 50x50mm box section tow bar receivers, commonly known as 2 inch square in Australia. Measure your receiver before purchase to ensure compatibility.

How it works

Tow bar tongues are slightly undersized to slide into the receiver easily. This gap causes noise and movement when driving. The shims eliminate this clearance, making the tow bar tongue and receiver move as one unit. This is a mechanical solution, unlike rubber pads, so it does not compress or wear out.

Effectiveness depends on the original gap and wear in your receiver. A tight receiver can become near silent, while a worn one will have reduced noise.

Material and durability

The shims are made from 304 stainless steel. Unlike zinc-plated steel, which quickly wears, stainless steel resists scratching and corrosion without a coating. The chromium in the alloy forms a protective oxide layer that self-repairs with exposure to air.

For use near saltwater, rinse the hitch and shims after exposure to salt. Regularly remove the shims to dry them and prevent corrosion inside the receiver.

Limitations

This kit is not suitable for permanent saltwater immersion. For constant immersion, 316 stainless steel is recommended.

Near coastal areas, 304 stainless steel may develop tea staining, a brown surface discoloration that does not affect strength and can be cleaned.
