The Dometic RM36, RM360, RM361, RM36A and RM36E are classic 3-way absorption refrigerators that were commonly fitted to caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes throughout the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. Originally developed under the Electrolux name before becoming part of the Dometic range, these refrigerators earned a reputation for reliable off-grid cooling and completely silent operation. Primary replacement model for these fridges is the RM2350.
Unlike modern compressor fridges, the RM36 series uses an absorption cooling system with no moving parts, allowing operation on LPG gas, 12V DC and 240V AC power. This made them particularly popular for extended touring and remote camping where power flexibility was essential.
Although these models have long been discontinued, many remain in service today, creating strong demand for replacement shelves, heating elements, gas components, seals and other spare parts.
Understanding the RM36 Series
Dometic RM36
The original RM36 was one of the earliest Dometic/Electrolux caravan refrigerators and became a common installation in Australian caravans during the 1970s.
Key Features
- Approx. 85 litres capacity
- Single-door design
- Internal freezer compartment
- LPG, 12V and 240V operation
- Manual controls
- Silent absorption cooling
Dometic RM360
The RM360 became one of the most widely used versions of the platform and was fitted to countless caravans and camper trailers worldwide.
Key Features
- Approx. 85 litre capacity
- 3-way operation
- Internal freezer compartment
- Compact installation footprint
- Proven absorption cooling technology
Dometic RM361
The RM361 shares the same cabinet platform as the RM360 but was offered with revised controls and ignition configurations depending on market and production year.
Key Features
- Approx. 85 litre capacity
- Same cabinet footprint as RM360
- 3-way absorption refrigeration
- Internal freezer compartment
Dometic RM36A
The RM36A was developed as an updated version of the original RM36 platform, retaining the same installation dimensions while incorporating model-specific control and component revisions.
Key Features
- Approx. 85-90 litre capacity
- Standard cabinet footprint
- Gas, 12V and 240V operation
- Compatible with many RM36-series components
Dometic RM36E
The RM36E is one of the later variants in the series and is often identified by its different ignition and control arrangements.
Key Features
- Approx. 85-90 litre capacity
- Single-door configuration
- 3-way operation
- Updated ignition and control systems
- Shared cabinet dimensions with other RM36 models
Common Specifications
Across the RM36 range, most models share:
- Approximate capacity of 85-90 litres
- Internal freezer compartment
- 3-way operation (Gas, 12V and 240V)
- Quiet absorption cooling
- Standard installation footprint
- Similar doors, shelves and cabinet components
- Designed for caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes
Approximate Cabinet Dimensions
- Height: 756 mm
- Width: 521 mm
- Depth: 538 mm
Because these dimensions remained largely unchanged throughout the RM36 family, many parts are interchangeable between models. The RM2350 is the closest replacement for these models.
Important Operating Information
Like all absorption refrigerators, the RM36 series must be operated on a reasonably level surface to maintain proper cooling performance. Good rear ventilation is also essential, as the cooling system relies on natural heat dissipation through the rear vents.
Many owners continue to use these refrigerators successfully decades after manufacture, making replacement parts an economical alternative to full fridge replacement.
