Is inverter aircon actually better for your caravan?

Inverter technology has become the new standard in caravan air conditioning, and on paper, it sounds like a clear win. In reality, it comes with a trade off worth understanding before you commit to one over the other.

What inverter technology actually does

An inverter aircon lets the compressor run at a much lower speed, rather than switching fully on and off. That means it can put out less power on demand, which is genuinely useful if you're working with limited electricity, a small generator, or running off batteries. Some of the latest models even let you control this through an app, winding the power draw down further when you need to stretch your battery.

The trade off nobody talks about as much

To make that variable speed control possible, inverter aircons need a lot more electronics, additional circuit boards that standard models simply don't have. More electronics means more that can potentially go wrong, and once you're out of warranty, repairs on these boards tend to be more involved and more expensive than a simpler, non inverter unit.

Is there a non inverter option worth considering?

Yes. Inverter technology is now standard across most of the market, but not every aircon has gone that route. The Truma Aventa, a German made unit, is one we genuinely rate. It doesn't use inverter technology, but it still starts up softly and runs well on a generator. We've also run it off batteries using a good quality 3000 watt inverter without any issues.

So which one should you get?

If you're regularly running on limited power and want that fine tuned control, inverter technology has real advantages. If you'd rather have a simpler system with fewer components to potentially fail down the track, a non inverter option like the Truma Aventa is worth a proper look.
